Chapter 32

The detectives open the other interview room where I see Evan behind a desk, his arms stretched out, yawning. The man doesn’t look like he has a care in the world. I’ve been nearly having a heart attack for the past several hours while Evan sits at a desk, drinking a soda.

I don't know who the person in front of me is, but it doesn't look like my husband. He doesn't look as frightened as I do after the questions I've answered.

When Evan sees me instead of the police walking into the room, he immediately stands up. “Alice!” he says, confused. “What are you— are you okay?”

“No!” I shout. “You've been lying to me.”

“What?”

“You killed a man?”

Evan looks around the empty room. “Alice,” he says, putting his hands down as if trying to get me to lower my voice. “We shouldn’t talk about this here. We should wait until the lawyer is involved.”

“You killed someone,” I repeat.

“It's not what you think.”

“You went to prison for murder. You never told me that! How could you? Don't you think that it would be important to tell your wife at some point in our life together? Were you ever going to say a word? You did it. You killed Nicole! Tell me now!”

Evan looks around the room again. “Stop, Alice. They're listening. Don't you know? Don't you see what they're doing?”

“I don't care what the police are doing! I don't care what's being recorded. You killed someone.” I think of Nicole. “Two people!”

“No!” he shouts back. “It was manslaughter. That man.”

I sigh in disbelief. “Do you even remember his name? How psychotic are you!”

“I know his damn name, Alice,” he says sternly. When he catches his tone he calms himself. “Steve Moore. I was engaged to Nicole at the time. We were at a bar. This guy, I mean Steve, was drunk and belligerent. Kept flirting with Nicole right in front of me. I was heated, but I let it go. Tommy was there too. He wanted to fight him for me, but I got him to back off. I stayed on the other side of the bar after. At one point, though, Nicole’s coming back with drinks in her hand, and Steve smacked her ass. She dropped the drinks and yelled at him. I immediately jumped in. We fought. I hit him hard. When he fell, he hit the side of a barstool. And—”

“Died,” I say, completing the sentence.

“I was arrested that night,” he says, taking a deep breath. “I got put in a room, just like this.” He looks around. “I answered every question the cops asked. Every damn question.” A tear is starting to form in his right eye. “And I spent a year in jail after the trial. Nicole left me almost immediately after I was officially arrested.”

I breathe in deep. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“She was pregnant,” he continues, lowering his head. “Nicole. She wasn’t drinking, but she wanted to come to the bar with Tommy and me.
